Former Iowa State basketball player Abdel Nader’s career progression was rewarded on Friday after Nader signed a four-year contract worth $6 million with the Boston Celtics.

Originally, Nader was a three-star prospect Illinois. Nader showcased his skills in high school and drew an offer from Northern Illinois.

Nader’s Northern Illinois career lasted for two seasons; Nader averaged double-digit points in both seasons.

After his sophomore campaign, Nader was on the transfer market. Iowa State’s head coach at the time, Fred Hoiberg, was in heavy pursuit of the 6-6 playmaker.

About a month after announcing his transfer from Northern Illinois, Nader committed to the Cyclones. Iowa State was searching for more scorers, after Melvin Ejim and DeAndre Kane graduated the season before.

Nader struggled in his first season in Ames. The junior averaged 5.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.

In his second season at Iowa State, Nader found his stroke. Nader averaged 12.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Nader finished third on the team in total points.

Nader’s collegiate career ended after a Sweet Sixteen loss to Virginia. Nader narrowed his focus to playing professionally. Nader’s teammate, Georges Niang, received a bulk of the draft attention, leaving Nader flying under the radar.

After the Indiana Pacers selected Niang with the 50th pick, Nader sneaked into the draft after being drafted by the Boston Celtics at pick number 58.

A loaded Celtics team pushed Nader into their D-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws. Nader capitalized on the opportunity. The rookie averaged 21.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. Nader was selected as the D-League Rookie of the Year.

His consistent play resulted in the contract on Friday. Nader’s next challenge to overcome, will be competing for playing time.
