UPDATE: Ray Kasongo will transfer from the Iowa State men’s basketball program, according to a press release from the university.

Kasongo’s departure gives Iowa State two open scholarships for the 2017-18 season.

ORIGINAL: College basketball has seen a huge spike in the number of transfers in recent years, and Iowa State is no exception.

On the same day Iowa State announced the addition of graduate transfer Hans Brase from Princeton, the Cyclones may have lost a player via transfer as well.

6-foot-9 forward Ray Kasongo, who sat out the 2016-17 season after transferring from Tennessee, has requested his release from the Iowa State basketball program. The story was first reported by Travis Hines of the Ames Tribune.

Kasongo likely saw his potential playing time decrease with the recent additions of Brase and Texas-San Antonio transfer Jeff Beverly.

Both Beverly and Brase will be immediately eligible for the Cyclones, and should find playing time alongside returning forward Solomon Young.

If Kasongo transfers out of the program, Iowa State will have two open scholarships for the 2017-18 season.
