For almost 40 years, Vince Gill has been on the country music scene. During that time, he has had much success with bands and as a solo artist. He has earned several hits, Grammy awards and many other honors. This Saturday, Gill will be performing at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines at 7:30 p.m.

Before the concert, here are 7 of his songs to listen to.

“Go Rest High on That Mountain”- Losing someone we love is something we all dread. But, I do not think there are too many country songs that comfort my feelings on loss better than this one. This song truly captures my heart, and it never fails to feel sentimental and peaceful. Gill’s soothing voice fits the tone perfectly with his well-written lyrics.

“Look at Us”-  From a country ballad about life, we move to a ballad about love. Seeing a couple who has been together for several years can be inspiring. This song tells listeners to look at those couples, the ones who have found a true undying love, and use what they have as an example for our own relationships. I recommend checking out the music video for this one, as it shows photos and footage from real-life couples. It adds an even sweeter touch to the already lovely song.

“Don’t Let Our Love Start Slippin’ Away”- Holding onto a relationship can be a difficult task sometimes. With this upbeat love song, Gill expresses those feelings. With life, many things can go wrong and because of that I feel Gill is saying to hold onto love because, at the end of the day, it will get you through everything else.

“When I Call Your Name”- Now we move onto a heartbreak song. Love gone wrong is a popular topic within the country music genre. It has been sung about ever since the days of Hank Williams. With this song, Gill gives us another great ballad. After his love leaves him, he reflects on what has happened and the frustration that comes with someone being gone.

“What the Cowgirls Do”- Who doesn’t love a song about cowgirls? Well, I am sure some people don’t like songs about cowgirls — they might be more into songs about city girls. But as for me, I love a fun and upbeat tune like this one. The lyrics in it are not quite as deep as some of the other music on this list, but this song is a catchy good time.

“You Better Think Twice”- In this song Gill gives some advice to one of his friends, as she is about to give her heart to a bad boy. I like the fun chorus in this tune, as it has this nice twangy vibe to it. Taking a chance on love can be risky, and this song warns listeners about that in a nice way.

“Liza Jane”- Why won’t Liza Jane call Vince Gill? I’m not sure. But I am sure that this 90s country hit is a pleasure to listen to. Sometimes, it can be easy to fall madly in love with someone and Gill’s lyrics capture those types of feelings. Liza Jane sounds like quite the lady, and this song is quite the tune.

Gill has had a pretty extensive career and this is only a small slice of his wide discography. To find out more about his upcoming show at Hoyt Sherman, visit the venue’s website
