A year in review: looking back at local music

With open mics, music festivals and concerts all around, it’s been a busy year in the Ames music scene. Take a look back at all the year’s events here:

September 2016

One of the more well-known events in town, the 6th annual Maximum Ames Music Festival took place over the weekend of September 15-18, and hosted over 100 acts, featuring a range of artists from all over Iowa, the United States and the world.

October 2016

A variety of shows at DG’s Taphouse, including Maximum Ames performers Evan Campbell and Eros and the Eschaton, as well as a number of events leading up to Halloween, culminating in a Halloween show featuring Ames band Electric Jury, Druids, Pets with Human Names and Crash Cuddle. London Underground also celebrated their 10th anniversary, and bands Electric Jury and Strong Like Bear came together to perform Pink Floyd’s Animals in full for the show.

December 2016

It was out with the old and in with the new at the New Year’s Eve show at DG’s, where Dead Larry, Doctor Murdock, Mumford’s and a surprise performance from Electric Jury.

January 2017

To ring in the new year, the 6th annual Ames Winter Classic took place in the M-Shop on January 20th. The night featured acoustic artist and Iowa State student Mumbi Kasumba, Kansas-based hardcore hip hop group Ebony Tusks and Des Moines’ very own Gloom Balloon.

February 2017

As part of a collaboration between the two record labels/studios in town, Maximum Ames and Nova Labs, known as “Max Labs” put on a Valentine’s Day show at London Underground. The show featured artists Elizabeth Zimmerman and Gloom Balloon.

April 2017

Nova Labs held their own festival, The Uncertainty Festival, over the weekend of April 21st and 22nd. The festival had 3 distinct parts, “Particle”, “Wave” and “Light”, and featured different artists across the different days, including Nate Logsdon, Ben Schrag and the Cautionaries, Doctor Murdock and Colorado-based indie pop group Dressy Bessy.
