The Iowa State women’s basketball team saw its season come to a close this afternoon, losing to Syracuse in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament 85-65.

It was a rough start to the game for Iowa State (18-12, 9-9 Big 12), while almost the polar opposite for Syracuse (21-10, 11-5 ACC).

The Cyclones could not get anything to fall their way and failed to get gain any momentum though much of the first half.

Iowa State ended the first quarter shooting only 11 percent from the field, compared to Syracuse who was shooting just over 55 percent. The Cyclones found themselves on the wrong end of a 25-point deficit, trailing 33-8.

A big part of the shooting difference came from Syracuse’s Gabby Cooper. Cooper, who averages just under 9 nine points per game, scored 15 of the first 20 points for the Orange, all of which came from beyond the 3-point arc.

After trailing by as many as 29 in the first half, the Cyclones tried to get a comeback going, cutting the lead to 17 in the second half. However, the deficit was just too much to overcome.

Although a disappointing loss, one bright spot came from senior Seanna Johnson. Johnson ended her career as a Cyclones recording a double-double and leading the team in scoring. She finished the game with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists.

Johnson concludes her career in seventh on the all-time scoring list for the Cyclones with 1,645 and third in rebounding with 1,052 boards. She was also the fastest player in school history to reach the 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds milestones.
