No. 5 Cyclone Hockey defeated the No. 12 Colorado Buffaloes 3-2 during its first game of the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s (ACHA) National Tournament on Saturday.

The tournament is the ACHA’s version of March Madness and features 20 teams trying to take home the national championship trophy.

After a scoreless first period, the Cyclones found themselves down 1-0 to Colorado in the second period.

But thanks to a pass from Eero Helanto, Aaron Azevedo tied the game with 10:19 to play in the second. Just two minutes later, Tony Uglem put one past the Colorado goaltender to give the Cyclones a 2-1 lead going into the third.

The score remained the same in the third period until A.J. Gullickson hammered one home with 1:46 to play in the game, sealing the win for the Cyclones.

Colorado tallied a second goal off of a redirect, but it proved to be too little, too late, as the Cyclones advanced.

No. 5 Cyclone Hockey will face No. 4 Central Oklahoma on Sunday at 10 a.m. for a trip to the semifinals.
