Iowa State pulled out a win over TCU on Saturday, 84-71. The Cyclones moved to 17-9 on the season, including 9-5 and a second-place tie in the Big 12.

Here is the story from the game.

Here are three additional takeaways from Iowa State’s win.

Huge game for the seniors

Iowa State senior guard Monte Morris finished with 18 points and 11 assists with just one turnover. Morris also tied Jeff Hornacek for the career school record with 211 steals.

Saturday was also Morris’ 112th consecutive start, which is a new Iowa State record.

Naz Mitrou-Long and Deonte Burton scored 25 and 18 points, respectively. All in all, Iowa State’s six seniors scored 69 of the team’s 84 points.

“Obviously Long was, well — no surprise, he can make threes,” TCU coach Jamie Dixon said. “We seemed to be a step late on him. Very good job by them.”

Even with Matt Thomas struggling to shoot — Thomas scored just two points on 0-for-5 shooting and missed all four of his 3-point attempts — the rest of the seniors stepped up to fill his shoes.

“It definitely feels awesome to get this type of team win,” Mitrou-Long said. “It was a collective group effort.”

Turnovers, turnovers and more turnovers

Iowa State forced 14 TCU turnovers in the first half, as the Cyclones took a 39-29 lead into the halftime break. TCU ended the game with 19 turnovers, as Iowa State outscored TCU 17-14 in points off turnovers.

“Obviously the turnovers hurt us early,” Dixon said. “I think we had five on the first five possessions — it was an interesting first couple minutes.”

The turnovers allowed Iowa State to get out to a hot start, as the Cyclones led by as many as 12 in the first half.

Turnovers were key in a night when, Iowa State coach Steve Prohm said, “both teams shot a pretty good percentage.”

“Our toughness is getting a little bit better,” Prohm said. “Defensively we were pretty good at times tonight.”

Hot shooting night

Iowa State converted on 12-of-15 3-point attempts. Mitrou-Long hit seven 3-pointers to lead the way for Iowa State.

The Cyclones also hit 18-of-21 free throws while TCU was just 5-for-8.

“You look at the sheet, Monte goes 11 assists with one turnover,” Mitrou-Long said. “And I can’t even recall that turnover. He was finding me all day.

“It could’ve easily been Matt, could’ve easily been Monte, could’ve easily been somebody else that were getting those shots.”

Four different players hit 3-pointers for the Cyclones. In addition to Mitrou-Long, Morris and point guard Donovan Jackson chipped in two apiece and Burton hit a 3-pointer as well.
