Iowa State gets first conference victory with dominant win over Kansas

Iowa State’s game against Kansas started off strong for the Cyclones and it ended the same way. The Cyclones (10-5, 1-3 Big 12) beat the Jayhawks 87-58.

The Cyclones went on a 14-0 run to end the first quarter as they took a 18-4 lead into the quarter break. Seanna Johnson and Jadda Buckley each had six points in the first quarter to pace the Cyclones.

The Jayhawks had just one made field goal in the first quarter with 10 turnovers and 10 missed shots.

The second quarter was much of the same. Iowa State won the quarter 25-15 thanks to strong offensive play from Heather Bowe, Bridget Carleton and Buckley. Iowa State led 43-19 at halftime.

Kansas’ leading scorer this season, Jessica Washington, was held to just two points on 0-for-3 shooting in the first half. She finished with four points on 1-for-9 shooting.

In the second half, Iowa State got contributions from the bench. Emily Durr scored eight points in the third quarter and Bowe added seven more. The Cyclones took a 69-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

Iowa State’s bench iced the game in the fourth to give the team the win.

Carleton finished with 21 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Johnson and Buckley chipped in 15 and 13, respectively. Bowe’s 16 points were a career-high, and she also chipped in 10 rebounds.
