Iowa State lets another lead slip away in 80-75 loss

After holding a double-digit halftime lead, Iowa State again faltered in the second half as it fell 80-75 at TCU on Sunday in Forth Worth, Texas.

Iowa State (10-7, 1-5 Big 12) held a lead for almost the entire first half.

Bridget Carleton led the way for Iowa State. The sophomore forward had a strong first half, tallying 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the first 20 minutes.

Carleton finished with 30 points, nine rebounds and four dimes. She played all 40 minutes.

Junior guard Emily Durr got her first start of the season at TCU, and Durr took advantage of the opportunity. She had seven points, three rebounds and three assists in the first half as Iowa State built a 38-27 lead going into the break.

Seanna Johnson, Iowa State’s leading scorer entering the game, was held scoreless in the first half.

The third quarter did not go Iowa State’s way. TCU won the quarter 29-16 to take a 56-54 lead into the final frame. TCU maintained that lead in the fourth quarter and eventually withstood a late comeback attempt to win 80-75.

Iowa State got just four points from its bench, compared to 23 for TCU’s bench. Additionally, Iowa State struggled to shoot. The Cyclones hit just nine of their 35 3-point attempts, good for 25.7 percent.

With this loss, coach Bill Fennelly’s squad is now in a tie for 8th place in the Big 12.
