Iowa State was involved in another tight matchup this weekend, coming from behind to defeat Toledo (1-5 Mid-American) 4-3 this afternoon.

The game started with Iowa State down early when Toledo’s Samantha Showalter hit a 2-run home run, putting the Rockets up 2-0. Mandi Moore would be pulled in the 2nd inning in favor for Emma Hylen, who didn’t give another run all game.

Even with tens hits in the game, the Cyclones struggled to score runs against Marla Gooding and the Rockets. They put runners in scoring position during the 3rd and 5th inning, but had nothing to show for it.

The score would stay the same until Iowa State finally broke through in the 7th, when Aly Cappaert hit a RBI single to right, cutting Toledo’s lead in half.

Then sophomore Kelsey McFarland hit a clutch 3-run home run over the centerfield wall, giving the Cyclones their first lead of the night. After allowing hits to the first two batters in the 7th, Hylen would lean on her defense and shut the door on the Rockets.

The Cyclones now improve to 7-2 on the season, and 2-1 in the Hilton Houston Plaza Invitational.

Iowa State plays its final game of the tournament tomorrow against Ball State, who the Cyclones beat Friday 8-5.
