ISU guard Kidd Blaskowsky went to the opening-game tip-off against Imani Boyette. It was 5-foot-7 against 6-foot-7. Blaskowsky didn’t even jump.

That was only the beginning for Iowa State (12-10, 4-7 Big 12), as it fell to No. 6 Texas (21-1, 10-1 Big 12), 65-49, on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum. It was the Cyclones sixth loss in a seven-game span.

The Longhorns took advantage of their size, out-rebounding the Cyclones, 52-33.

Iowa State’s shooting woes were clearly evident in the first quarter. But luckily for the Cyclones, the Longhorns didn’t fare much better.

The Cyclones went 3-for-7 in the first five minutes of the game and trailed, 8-7. But they went cold after that, finishing the last five minutes 0-for-8 from the field. Texas led, 12-7, at the end of the quarter.

The two teams combined to shoot 9-for-32 from the field, and Iowa State shot 3-for-15 alone in the first quarter.

The second quarter wasn’t much better, as the Cyclones started to inch back. Helped by guard Jadda Buckley’s nine first-half points, Iowa State tied the game at 16 with just more than three minutes to go in the half.

The Cyclones went into the locker room tied at 20.

Iowa State took its first lead of the game just three minutes into the third quarter, 24-22, and kept that lead for most of the period. But Texas crept back and traded baskets with Iowa State, and took a 43-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Longhorns wouldn’t relinquish that lead in the fourth quarter. They dominated on the glass, out-rebounding Iowa State, 29-13, in the second half and kept Iowa State’s offense at bay to close out the game.
