The Knocks and Cardiknox hosted a dynamic dance party Thursday night at the M-Shop.

As Cardiknox took the stage fashionably late, around 8:20 p.m., it was clear that this opener was not going to be satisfied as being just the warm up act. The band wanted its own set to feel energetic and charismatic to stand out on its own.

The band’s synth-pop sound was incredibly danceable, sparking some moves from the crowd, but was enhanced by frontwoman Lonnie Angle’s entrancing vocal performance.

The group’s short set was packed with tunes to make anyone bust a move and they powered through tracks like “On My Way” and “Earthquake” with precision.

“I am feeling you, Iowa,” Angle said before kicking off “Into the Night.”

Cardiknox’s set was an enjoyable 30 minutes of dance-pop with plenty of energy that didn’t overstay its welcome.

But if Cardiknox’s danceable set was compared to a wave crashing on the beach, The Knocks’ was more akin to a tsunami.

“We’re happy to see so many people here. I think we’ve played in Iowa once our whole lives,” Ben “B-Roc” Ruttner said, opening the show.

The New York City duo wasted little time in their 70-minute set; sending out hypnotic dance beats one after the other. Fan favorites like “New York City” and “Dancing With Myself” were performed early in the set to get the bodies in the crowd moving.

By the time The Knocks got to “Modern Hearts” halfway through, a dance fever had spread throughout the entire crowd preventing anyone from standing still.

“This is usually the part where we go backstage, but there’s no backstage here so were gonna stay,” B-Roc said introducing “Modern Hearts.” “It’s also the time we usually refill our drinks, so if someone could refill our drinks that would be great.”

The duo saved most of their newest songs for the finale, where “I Wish (My Taylor Swift),” “Kiss the Sky” and “Classic” were three of the last four songs played.

“We’ve been doing the dance thing for about seven years now, but before that we were hip-hop producers,” James “Mr. JPatt” Patterson said before kicking off “Kiss the Sky.”

Angle joined The Knocks on stage perform the vocals of the group’s most popular song “Classic,” which is usually performed by Powers’ Crista Ru, to close the show.

The Knocks’ performance was a relentless barrage of dance beats that is sure to remain unmatched as the best dance party the M-Shop will see this year.
