Perks of diversity

Differences can be seen as a negative, but should be viewed positively. Diversity is now cherished throughout many organizations. Instead of separating people, it can bring people together and create experiences that would not have otherwise been created. Innovations in our society and technology would not have been made possible without the gathering of all types of people. Also, diversity can make someone more sociable in the long run, getting out of your comfort zone and branching out will prepare you for the real world!

Here are a few advantages to diversity:

1) Getting another point of view: Growing up every family has different traditions, morals and ways of life. Sometimes it is hard to see things in black and white and gaining another perspective can help create a bigger picture.

2) Tasting different foods: Each part of the world creates speciality dishes that wouldn’t have been created without the specific culture. There are many delicious treats that have been diversely created, such as a Polish Kolaczki, Spanish Polovorones and an Italian Pizzelle.

3) Exchanging ideas: Everyone has a different way of thinking, and bringing different groups of people together can create an even broader spectrum of thought. Although many do not prefer to work in groups, sometimes two heads are better than one. Creating something as a group can bring a new idea to a place that couldn’t be created by one person.

4) Creating international relationships: Especially on a college campus, there are students from every part of the world. There is the worry of not being able to communicate across a great distance, but with the help of technology, it is easy to stay in touch!

5) Cultural awareness and acceptance: All individuals have different struggles and battles to fight each day, cultural hate should not be one of them. It is important to be open minded and accepting towards everyone, because at the end of the day we are all human. Every culture deserves to be represented and appreciated and that is why it is important to always be learning and expanding knowledge throughout the world.
