How to survive the winter

Casey Laktas

Winter is arriving and unfortunately the snow has decided to fall early this year. The combination of wind and snow can make it difficult to get out of bed and make the trek to class, so here are some tips to help make it easier.

  1. Multiple Layers: This may seem obvious, but people that aren’t from the midwest underestimate how cold it actually is. The wind plays a huge factor, so wear lots of layers and bringing a scarf, gloves and hat is always a good idea.

  2. Extra Socks: Maybe you choose the wrong pair of shoes or maybe you stepped in the snow, either way an extra pair of socks can’t hurt and will definitely save your feet from freezing in class.

  3. The Perfect Coat: Sometimes you need to invest in something so it will last longer, and a good coat is one of them. A coat can make or break your walk to class, so make sure you have a thick and long coat so not just your arms are warm.

  4. Carry a Hot Beverage: Carrying coffee around can not only make you feel better after studying all night, but can also warm you up, especially your hands. Even if you aren’t a coffee drinker, there are different options like tea or hot chocolate, and the cafes around campus also have some great choices.

  5. Think Ahead: With inches of snow and icy roads, it can take much longer to get to your classes, so plan ahead. If you are walking leave a few minutes earlier than normal and if you are driving take it slow and leave even earlier because everybody else on the road has the same idea.

  6. Stop at the gym: Nobody wants to think of the gym while they are freezing, but going to the gym can get your blood flowing. This will help you feel warmer and of course, exercise is always a good option no matter what season.

Winter is dreaded by many students and can definitely be a burden when trying to walk to class, but with some help you can make the walk a little easier. So put on your layers, make your coffee in the morning and spring will be here soon enough!
