The Blackberry Bushes and Rockets of Desire will perform from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the Bluestem Stage.

Tickets are available now at Eventbrite and cost $10 for students and $12 for non-students.

Rockets of Desire, a local alternative folk band, will open the show. Members of the band,

Bryon and Rachel Dudley and Thomas Russell have been seen in previous events all around Ames.

The Blackberry Bushes are from Seattle, Washington. They are an all-string band known for their Americana, bluegrass and folk music.

The band features Jes Raymond singing lead vocals and playing guitar, Jakob Breitbach on fiddle and vocals, Forrest Marowitz on bass and vocals, Daniel Ulom on mandolin and vocals and, lastly, Alex Genova on banjo and vocals.

Being an all-string band means all-acoustic music and no drums. Raymond said they have been this way since the start, since the band members exclusively played stringed instruments. This created a unique style and sound.

“There is also a lot of nuance to string bands, especially a show like we are playing at the Bluestem where it is a listening room,” Raymond said. “String bands really shine in those kinds of environments because you can create so much interplay between the instruments.”

Currently, The Blackberry Bushes are touring and promoting their latest album entitled “Three Red Feathers.” Their tour started on Aug. 29 and they are working their way through the country on a track back to their home in Seattle.

“I love being on stage and feeling the energy,” Raymond said. “I love seeing people dance or sing along, and it’s a pretty awesome thing to see the people come together and have an experience together that is unique. It isn’t something that happens every day.”

Raymond also writes most of the music for the group and said that the early developmental stages of songs are some of her favorite parts about having a career in music. She draws inspiration from anything and everything, while writing a new song could happen any time.
