ISU planning for new crematorium

Iowa State University is planning for a cremation garden on campus as the ISU cemetery nears capacity.

  • Iowa State’s current cemetery fills 1.7 acres on the northwest corner of campus.
  • The current cemetery is home to more than 700 graves.
  • The new columbarium will hold thousands of individual cremains.
  • “It allows us to efficiently use the land and accommodate a broader group of people’s interest in one way or another here on campus,” said Cathy Brown, assistant director for campus physical planning.
  • The cost of the project is expected to be $1 million.
  • Spaces will be approximately $6,000.
  • Construction is expected to begin in summer 2016.
