Slow starts hurt ISU soccer against Iowa, NDSU

Slow starts seem to be becoming a troublesome habit for ISU soccer after giving up goals in the first 10 minutes of the last two games.

The Cyclones have dug themselves into holes and then struggled to get out of them.

“I had no doubt we could recover from that,” said junior Koree Willer. “We have the ability to anyday, but at some point we have to figure out how to not get ourselves in that hole so we set ourselves up for the rest of the game.”

In the last two games, allowing that early goal may have been a deciding factor. The Cyclones lost both games by a single goal, which caused the team to look at the early mistakes they made.

“It seems like the first five minutes is determining the result of a lot of our games, so we got to figure that out,” Willer said.

On Friday, the Hawkeyes emerged victorious in the first Cy-Hawk series event of the year by a score of 1-0, after they got on the board in the sixth minute of the game. The Hawkeyes earned an early corner kick, which was converted into a goal-scoring header.

The Cyclones were unable to make anything happen in the second half and ultimately fell by a 1-0 score.

With the losses to Iowa and NDSU, the Cyclones fall to 4-4.
