It’s career fair time again on Iowa State’s campus. Whether you’re a freshman who barely knows what they want to do, or you’re a senior looking for the perfect job after graduation. Here are some dos and don’ts when it comes to the career fair.

Do: Dress Up

After all this is the first impression a future employer has of you. You don’t want to be that guy or girl who everyone stares at because you have on a hoodie and jeans. Go looking through your closet for a nice shirt and some dress pants.

Don’t: Blow off the career fair

Some people don’t bother with the career fair because they don’t have a resume or their major wouldn’t fit with any company. This is false. There is over 200 companies at the career fairs and probably something there interests you. Even if you aren’t ready for a job or internship, the career fair can give you valuable experience that can be used down the line.

Do: Be prepared

If you did your research and know some of the companies that are attending, pick up some facts about the ones that interest you most. Companies want people who are interested in what they’re doing, and if you want to work for them it’s good to know what they’re all about.

Don’t: Tell the employers you’re just “Required” to go

If you’re at the career fairs, it might be because you’re required to go and you have no real interest in being there. However, don’t let the employers know that. It sounds rude and you might ruin a good opportunity for yourself.

Do: Practice what you’re going to say

Practice makes perfect. Interviews can be nerve racking and the career fairs are no different. Know what you’re going to say and how you’re going to introduce yourself. It’s critical if you’re someone who gets nervous and tends to forget important information in one-on-one settings.

Don’t: Limit Yourself

Their are tons of opportunities at all of the career fairs. Don’t limit yourself to just one career fair because you think that’s your only opportunity to find work experience. Companies want all kinds of majors, so take advantage of all the career fairs this week.
