Ward: An enthralling 19th season of ‘The Bachelor’ brings twists, larger-than-ever cast

The world first met “Prince Farming” in January as he began his journey to find love during season 19 of “The Bachelor.” And Monday night, nearly three months and 30 women later, we finally reach the end of the road when Chris Soules hands out his final rose. But looking back, this season was not the most simplistic of Bachelor seasons as it included drama from the girl whose husband died, numerous virgins, mass amounts of kissing and the onion girl. Needless to say, our resident Iowan and all his ladies have given us lots to talk about.

The first episode of the popular reality show aired Jan. 5 on ABC, and we were all introduced to a handsome farmer from Iowa and the unprecedented amount of women on the show all competing for his affections.

The first episode started normally with women from all walks of life showing up in limos with hopes of becoming the “one” for Chris Soules. But after the first 15 women were comfortable in the Bachelor mansion, they were greeted with the unfortunate surprise of another limo containing 15 additional women, which brought the total to 30 — a number never seen in Bachelor history.

Having this many women on the show and making it a surprise for all involved clearly put the ladies on edge, which is what I believe started the drama of the season. Usually the ladies have to conjure something up for themselves, but the casting department took care of that this year.

When the season was just getting started, there weren’t any clear mean girls in the house, which was rather disappointing because in a typical Bachelor season, the mean girl presents herself within the first episode. However, there was one girl, Ashely S., who was rather obsessed with talking about an onion that she thought was growing on a tree behind her, which turned out to be a pomegranate. I can honestly say that I believe she had to be planted by Bachelor casting because there is no way they would let someone on the show who was that genuinely disturbed and socially awkward. Anyway, back to the important stuff.

I think that this season’s lack of a designated mean girl was replaced by the plot twists that occurred almost every step of the way. After the first rose ceremony took place in the first episode, a girl ignored Chris’ decision to send her home and begged for a second chance. Later in the season, eliminated contestant Jordan drove to Santa Fe, N.M. to beg Chris for a second chance.

But all of this put aside, the most talked about and possibly the most deviant of any Bachelor contestant both this season and all the others was Kelsey. For those of you who didn’t watch this rather enthralling season, Kelsey is a guidance counselor from Austin, Texas and is not what I would call Bachelor material. To be frank, I’m not even sure why she was chosen to be on the show because she isn’t the typical image of a Bachelor contestant but hey, that’s on the casting people.

The reason Kelsey Poe was the talk of season 19 was because of her “amazing story” and by that I mean she really loved to talk about how her husband dropped dead. And it wasn’t an emotional talk about her deceased spouse, it tended to be rather neutral and usually ended with her rather shrill laugh. Additionally, she was rather calculated as to when she brought up her husband with Chris.

The fifth episode looked to be the end for Kelsey, which would have been alright with me, after she invited herself to Chris’ hotel to tell him about her husband. Later that night during the rose ceremony, Chris walked out after briefly letting the girls know about the conversation. Kelsey essentially stopped the rose ceremony and looked like she knew the end was coming. But Kelsey isn’t the kind of person to give up easily, so what does she do? Well, she naturally has a very dramatic and very loud panic attack in the hallway and later asks to specifically see Chris. I don’t know about you guys but if I was looking like a mess on the floor, the last person I would want to see is a guy who I’m interested in. Kelsey was playing the game for herself and not to fall in love again. Plain and simple.

Chris is now down to Whitney, a fertility nurse from Chicago and Becca, a chiropractic assistant from San Diego who was one of the two virgins this season. Part of Chris’ choice depends on who he can see moving to his small town of Arlington, Iowa and I just don’t see Whitney being that girl. She is far too invested in her career and Chris isn’t the kind of guy to uproot someone from a passion like that, I don’t think. Perhaps this is biased because Becca has been a favorite of mine from the very start but tonight I’m keeping my fingers crossed that she gets the final rose.
