The Lowdown

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

The ISU women’s basketball team traveled south to Fort Worth, Texas, for its first conference road match of the year and found not only warmer temperatures, but also hotter shooting out of the gates.

Iowa State (10-3, 1-1 Big 12) scored the first 11 points of the contest against TCU and aided by Brynn Williamson’s 18 first-half points, found a comfortable 44-21 halftime lead.

The Horned Frogs (9-4, 1-1 Big 12) were held scoreless for more than six minutes after tipoff, but halftime adjustments helped them find a groove in the second half.

Behind improved shooting, a plethora of fouls and a quick whistle from the officials, TCU clawed its way back into the contest. Trailing 82-77, the Horned Frogs drew a flagrant foul on ISU guard Seanna Johnson and used the free throws and ensuing possession to tie the game at 82.

A layup from TCU forward Chelsea Prince gave the Horned Frogs their first lead of the night. Though two Seanna Johnson free throws tied the game, another layup from Prince and a blocked ISU inbound pass with 1.6 seconds sealed the comeback win for the home squad.

X-Factor

The whistle: A number of fouls called throughout the game, but especially in the second half, limited ISU floor general Nikki Moody to just 15 minutes and kept the Cyclones from carrying the tempo that was established in the first half to the second half. TCU racked up 15 fouls in the second half to keep Iowa State’s rhythm choppy and though Iowa State went 25-of-26 from the charity stripe, it was not enough to get the win.

By the Numbers

96.2: Iowa State’s percentage on free throws, making 25-of-26 attempts.

65: Points scored in the second half by TCU after netting only 21 points in the first half.

22: Fouls committed by TCU on the night, including 15 in the second half.

20: Turnovers for the Cyclones, who gave the ball away 21 times in a win against Kansas State last time out.

Up Next

The Cyclones return home to face their toughest opponent to date, the No. 3 Texas Longhorns. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. on Jan. 10 at Hilton Coliseum.
