ABC Family’s ’25 Days of Christmas’ review

Emily Benda

During the month of December, it is not uncommon to come across a Christmas movie while channel surfing on the TV. One of the most well known channels to air classic holiday movies is ABC Family during the channel’s “25 Days of Christmas.”

As the title implies, ABC Family airs Christmas movies everyday from Dec. 1-25. This is an annual holiday special that started in 1996 as The Family Channel’s “25 Days of Christmas.” Since then, at least one new holiday-related TV film has been produced every year for viewers.

While ABC Family does include a vast variety of Christmas specials, there are some movies that are aired more frequently than others. I have gone through this year’s program schedule and chosen the movies that I think are played too often, shown just the right amount of times or should be seen more on the ABC Family channel.

Movies that were overplayed:

“The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause” was shown five times during “25 Days of Christmas.”While I am a huge fan of the original The Santa Clause, the third movie in this series does not really compare. I think the plot is too ridiculous and the ending is a bit predictable. Surprisingly, this movie is played just as often as the first and even more times than “The Santa Clause 2,” which is not shown at all during the “25 Days of Christmas.” I would like to see ABC Family decrease the number of showings for this movie to three or four times in the future.

“The Year Without a Santa Claus” was shown 11 times during “25 Days of Christmas.”This movie takes first place as the most played movie of ABC Family’s “25 Days of Christmas” special this year. Although “The Year Without a Santa Claus” is a favorite of younger children, 11 times is more than enough opportunities for kids and their families to see the 90-minute program. One can only hear the movie’s famous “The Snow Miser Song” so many times before going insane.

Movie that was played the right amount of times:

“Elf” was shown eight times during “25 Days of Christmas.” This Will Ferrell movie has become a classic for the whole family to enjoy. It has everything a good Christmas movie should have: humor, family love and a little Christmas music. ABC Family has done a great job by giving viewers plenty of opportunities to see the movie this Christmas season.

Movies I want more of:

The 1994 version of “Miracle of 34th Street,” was shown only three times during “25 Days of Christmas.” “Miracle on 34th Street” is a movie that will warm anyone’s heart. I think it is often not given enough credit because it is not one of the funnier shows, but it promotes good Christmas values, such as family, kindness and generosity. I hope that ABC Family will increase the number of showings of this movie to about five times.

“The Santa Clause” was shown five times during “25 Days of Christmas.” As I said before, “The Santa Claus” is one of my favorite Christmas movies and is something the whole family can watch together. Tim Allen is hilarious and his on-screen son is the cutest little kid. Why wouldn’t this movie be shown more?
