Iowa State held the University Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in the Durham Great Hall of the Memorial Union. Awards spanned the title of Distinguished Professor to awards for excellence in professional staff positions.

Jill Weber, a human sciences extension specialist, presented awards for the Iowa State University Award for Outstanding Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice, the Iowa State University Award for Early Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice and the Iowa State University R.K. Bliss Extention Award.

David Spalding, dean of the Ivy College of Business and interim vice president for Economic Development and Business Engagement, presented the Iowa State University Award for Professional and Scientific Excellence, the Carroll Ringgenberg Award and the Iowa State University Award for Professional and Scientific Outstanding New Professional.

Younger recognized Michael Wigton, associate teaching professor, for his work going above and beyond in working with students. Younger offered a short story about how Wigton reached out to a student’s parents after noticing a concerning absence and unresponsiveness, helping to solve a mental health crisis. “Professor Wigton’s care did not just end there he went on to advocate for their son with other professors so that he could finish the semester and pass his classes,” Younger said. “In short, these parents wrote, “it is truly a miracle that Professor Wigton came into our sons life. We have no doubt in our mind that he truly saved our sons life.’”

Senior Vice President and Provost, Jonathan Wickert presented the Iowa State University Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching, the James Huntington Ellis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Introductory Teaching, the Iowa State University Award for Early Achievement in Teaching and the Iowa State University Award for Early Achievement in Departmental Leadership. Wickert recognizing Dirk Deam, teaching professor of political science with the Iowa State University Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching.

Wendy Stensland, manager at the diagnostic laboratory, was recognized with the Regents Award for Staff Excellence. Stensland was commended for her efforts within the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory to get Iowa State’s COVID-19 testing service operational. “More recently, Wendy played a key role in the VDLs [Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory] efforts to stand up and operationalize the COVID-19 testing service at Iowa State,” Wintersteen said. “And I’ll also just adlib here for a minute and say, truly when the VDL opened, it helped the entire state get through the COVID epidemic.”

Iowa State University administrators presented faculty and staff with awards recognizing work ranging from distinguished professor to going above and beyond to help students. President Wendy Wintersteen opened the ceremony Wednesday afternoon with a few words before presenting the title of Distinguished Professor to five separate professors. Wintersteen also presented the University Professor and Morrill Professor awards as well as the Regent’s Awards for Staff and Faculty Excellence.

Steve Butler was awarded the title of Morrill Professor. The award goes to Faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching our extension and outreach programs as well as other areas of faculty responsibility. “He is known for teaching some of the most challenging courses while also making them some of the most enjoyable on campus, he has also managed to maintain a significant research profile and is recognized as a world expert on the mathematics of juggling,” Wintersteen said.

Sri Sritharan, Wilkinson chair of interdisciplinary engineering and assistant dean for the college of engineering, was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor. The title is Iowa State’s highest academic honor, recognizing faculty members whose research or creative activities have had a significant impact on their discipline.
