Pineapple Ginger Smoothie

Did you know ginger can help prevent headaches? This smoothie in the morning is a perfect treat to not only prevent headaches but also give you that extra boost for the day instead of a cup of coffee.

Ingredients

  • 1 inch fresh ginger, peeled and chopped
  • 1 medium pineapple, peeled, cored and chopped
  • Sugar to taste
  • About 10 ice cubes

Directions

Working in batches if necessary, put the ginger in a blender, add the pineapple and blend it into a smooth puree, adding ice water if necessary to help the blades run smoothly. Taste and add sugar if you want a sweeter taste. Toss in the ice cubes, blend to a consistency you like and pour in a chilled glass and serve.

Spicy Sausage Quiche

This quiche is packed full of protein and vegetables and the spiciness makes it even better. Eating spicy foods can help boost your metabolism, which is perfect to add to a healthy meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound turkey sausage
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon minced jalapeno pepper
  • 10 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Place the sausage in a large, deep skillet and cook over medium heat until evenly brown. Drain and crumble. Spread the sausage into the bottom of the baking dish. Sprinkle with cheeses, onion and jalapeno pepper. In a medium bowl, mix eggs with chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Pour over ingredients in baking dish. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes, then cut into squares.

Lemon Yogurt Pound Cake

This pound cake isn’t just a tasty end to your breakfast — the lemons in it help your body destroy bad bacteria that occurs from being around thousands of people every day. Lemons are also good for your eyesight, so go ahead and have another slice.

Ingredients

  • Nonstick cooking spray 
  • 1 1/2 cups white whole-wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • Zest of one lemon
  • 1/2 cup plain low-fat Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup low-fat milk
  • 1/4 cup light olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 large egg

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Coat an 8 1/2-by-4 1/2-inch loaf pan with cooking spray. Whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Rub the lemon zest into the sugar with your fingers in a separate bowl. Add the yogurt, milk, olive oil, vanilla, egg whites and whole egg to the zest and sugar mixture. Whisk until well blended. Add the flour mixture into the egg mixture and fold until incorporated. Pour into the greased ban and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 50 minutes. Cool cake in the pan on a wire rack for 5 minutes, then take out and cool to room temperature.
