Leadership is key for ISU women’s cross country team

After leading her team in scoring in the final five events of last season, junior Crystal Nelson is expected to be one of the leaders on the ISU women’s cross country team again this year.

This year, ISU head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough expects Nelson to have added talent competing with her.

“[Redshirt senior] Katy Moen is running phenomenal right now,” Grove-McDonough said. “I don’t think there’s one set leader this year. [Sophomore] Bethanie Brown and [graduate student] Margaret Connelly are really stepping up this year too. I think any of them on any given day could be that top runner.”

Nelson said anyone could have been the number one runner on any given day last year.

Grove-McDonough will have an opportunity to see her best runners in action for the first time this season at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 27. The event will take place at 12:20 p.m. on the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.
