Cyclone Hockey finished its pre-ACHA schedule Sept. 13, securing a two-game sweep over the North Iowa Bulls with a 3-1 win.

North Iowa came out ready to play, shooting 16 shots on net in the first period, but couldn’t find twine. That was partly in thanks to goaltender Scott Ismond.

The Cyclones opened the scoring with a behind-the-net pass to Matt Szpak from Joey DeLuca. The Bulls answered back three minutes later with a power play goal by Kohei Sato off a loose rebound.

With the score even going into the third period, North Iowa committed two penalties that allowed a 5-on-3 power play for Iowa State. The Cyclones capitalized and scored on a perfectly-executed pass play from Antti Helanto and Nate Percy to Preston Blanek to pull ahead. Zack Johnson scored his fourth goal in three games on an empty netter to secure the victory.

Ismond had a night to remember, stopping 31 of 32 shots with a few highlight-reel saves. Percy finished off a fine weekend, tallying a goal and an assist in two nights.

Cyclone Hockey faces Oklahoma for its ACHA opener Sept. 19 and 20 at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
