Cyclone Hockey drops conference opener

Cyclone Hockey couldn’t exact its revenge on Oklahoma for last year’s national tournament defeat, losing its ACHA opener 3-1 Sept. 19 at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.

It was evident from the beginning that the No. 5 ranked Cyclones (0-1-0 ACHA) and the No. 4 ranked Sooners (1-0-0 ACHA) had recent history from the many big hits and tussles after the whistle.

Oklahoma took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal with just under two minutes left in the first period. Sooner forward Tyler Jones wristed a shot from a sharp angle that found the far left side of the net.

Oklahoma extended its lead to 2-0 in the second period after Darrell Boldon finished a rebound with just under three minutes remaining.

Following a penalty by Oklahoma, Antti Helanto took a slap shot from the blue line to get one back for Iowa State. But Boldon answered back for his second goal on the night and gave the Sooners a comfortable 3-1 lead.

The Cyclones finish their ACHA opening series against Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
