5 best ‘Saturday Night Live’ skits ever

Christian Dahl

5. Celebrity Jeopardy

Originally airing in 1996, this skit takes the trivia game show Jeopardy, plugs in ridiculous celebrity impressions, and hilarity ensues. This skit is made up of Jimmy Fallon playing an overly confident and oblivious French Stewart, Norm Macdonald playing Burt Reynold’s who continues to prank anyone and everyone, and Darrell Hammond playing Sean Connery, who is relentless in his harpooning of the show host. The best part of the skit is the host. Will Farrell plays Alex Trebek, who starts every episode calm, cool, and collected and unravels every time.

4. Bill Swerski’s Superfans

Taking place in 1991, this skit covers a radio show and its hosts as they talk Chicago Sports. They discuss everything from their idol Mike Ditka, their love for polish sausage, and there is even an appearance made by Michael Jordan. The only thing in their lives worse than a Chicago team losing, is one of the guys suffering from a massive heart attack. While their diet’s consist only of sausage, beer, and bulls games, these men have a substantial amount of heart problems, with one of them suffering from their 13th heart attack on air. Lucky for us, Chris Farley’s character recovers and proceeds to hula dance with MJ.

3.) Wayne’s World

This sketch revolves around two men, Wayne and Garth, and their love for rock, roll, and ladies. These two host a show out of Wayne’s parent’s basement in Aurora Illinois. From their rock sesh with their idol’s Aerosmith, to their extended fantasies about various different women, this is one public access show that was actually enjoyable.

2.) Behind the Music: Blue Oyster Cult

This skit cemented Will Farrell’s as one of SNL’s greatest of all time. Set in 1976, this mockumentary covers the band, Blue Oyster Cult, in their recording of their smash it, “Don’t Fear The Reaper”. With Christopher Walken playing a record executive, the recording sounds great. The only problem with the band’s sound is that there simply isn’t enough cowbell. Producing what may have been the biggest catchphrase in SNL history, this is a must watch.

1.) Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker

Playing a character that he had been perfecting for years at improv clubs, Chris Farley’s genius really shines in this sketch. Matt Foley, the motivational speaker, is a man whose life is in more shambles than those he preaches to. After being locked in a basement all day drinking coffee, he gives a speech to two teens that were recently caught “smoking doobies”. Between Foley’s antics, his unforgiving sweat glands, and the lack of remorse shown by the Christina Applegate and David Spade’s characters, this is truly one for the history books. If you don’t watch this, you will probably end up living in a van down by the river.
