Transform old sweaters with easy changes

To update your old sweater, you will need the sweater, material to create the iron-on designs and an iron.

Many students enter each new season with a desire for closet transformation. The change in weather is often associated with a change of wardrobe — stylish clothes from last season seem dated and no longer trendy. Questions form about why that hideously boring sweater in the back of your closet was purchased in the first place. Then the reality that a student salary won’t fund a fancy dinner, let alone a fancy wardrobe, sinks in.

With the help of a DIY project, closets can be revamped at a reasonable price. The supplies needed are: an iron, scissors, old sweater, circle template or stencil, Wonder-Under — double sided interfacing — and a fabric of choice.

Step 1: Attach the Wonder-Under to the backside of the fabric with an iron. Wonder-Under can be purchased at any fabric store and comes with directions. In this particular example, a gold pleather was used to create the polka dots. Any fabric will work fine.

Step 2: Using a circle template or stencil, trace circles onto the paper side of the Wonder-Under interfacing.

Step 3: Cut out the circles using fabric scissors. Peel off the paper and iron the circles onto the sweater while following the Wonder-Under directions. Be sure to turn the sweater inside-out and lay a light cloth over it before ironing on the gold circles. Try pinning the circles in place to achieve the desired spacing and design.
