Journey through time of NORML lawsuit

NORML ISU was founded in early 2012 and has had an eventful couple of years. Check out the full story here.

October 2012: Complaints to administration officials about the T-shirt a member of NORML ISU was wearing in a photo in the Des Moines Register. The T-shirt featured Cy, Iowa State’s mascot, and a marijuana leaf.

January 2013: The Iowa State Trademark Licensing Office updates its guidelines to state the designs with “dangerous, illegal or unhealthy products, actions or behaviors” will not be allowed.

March 2014: The Foundation of Individual Rights in Education posts a letter to the ISU administration on NORML ISU’s behalf, stating its grievances.

July 2014: Paul Gerlich and Erin Furleigh, president and vice president of NORML ISU, filed suit in U.S. district court asking the judge to rule Iowa State violated its First Amendment rights.

September 2014: Iowa State files a motion to dismiss the lawsuit against the university.
