Album of the Week: Days Before Rodeo by Travis Scott

Christian Dahl

Be warned, this is not your average rap album. While Travis Scott may not be household name quite yet, his latest effort may soon change that. Days Before Rodeo is his second full-length project, and it has something in common with his first album, Owl Pharaoh. Both albums were released for free via the Internet.

This release technique is much more common when an artist releases a mixtape, but Scott took to twitter to confirm that this was indeed an album. As touched on earlier, this album has a different tone from most everything put out this year. This album definitely has a darker tone, that dives into the depths of Scott’s mind and the result is “outlandish”.

A comparison, sound-wise, could be to that of the recent works by Kanye West. Scott has also been known to be greatly influenced by some of Kid Cudi’s earlier works. Known among his peers as one of the hottest producers out right now, it is nice to see that his lyrics and content don’t take backseat to the instrumentals.

With a wide range of features from Big Sean and Young Thug, to Migos and T.I., this album definitely has its share of different voices and styles. Scott has mentioned that while making this album he pictures a carnival, and wants to help kids find their inner creativity. With this album being free to download from various sites on the web, it would make no sense not to grab it.
