Offense wins games, but defense wins championships. This common football reference rings true in the game of soccer as well.

ISU women’s soccer team has emphasized defense this season under first year head coach Tony Minatta. Here are 5 “quick kicks” about the ISU defense:

1. Head Coach Tony Minatta primarily played defense during his playing days.

2. Iowa State has recorded shutouts in two of its last three games. The shutout performances have come against North Dakota State and the University of Northern Colorado.

3. Madi Ott and Kourtney Camy, two of Iowa State’s main defenders, are tied for most minutes played on the team — after goalkeeper Andrea Swanson — with 585. Fellow defender Haley Albert is next on the team with 561.

4. Iowa State has only allowed multiple goals to an opponent twice this season. University of Southern California scored three times and Denver University found the back of the net twice.

5. Goalkeeper Andrea Swanson, the last line of defense for the Cyclones, has played every minute of the season in the goal for the Cyclones. Swanson is 5-3 with 26 saves, while only giving up 1.13 goals per game.
