Volunteering in Ames and on campus

Sam Vander Forest

The state of Iowa is ranked fifth out of the 50 states in overall volunteer hours and civic engagement. Being a Cyclone reflects that and is shown in everything students and residents of Ames do.

Both Iowa State and Ames come together throughout the year to help keep the school and community clean and thriving. There are dozens of volunteer events with which students can get involved, including Dance Marathon and the blood drives. There are specific places throughout campus and Ames that can help you get started volunteering.

• CyServe Council — The council holds six CyServe days throughout the year as well as assisting other organizations by supplying resources and people.

• Volunteer Center of Story County — The center’s website provides great volunteer opportunities that are centered on the whole county rather than just Iowa State. Located near campus, it is easy for students to stop by and get information.

• United Way of Story County — The United Way is a well-known organization. Here in Story County, it focuses on improving the community through education, income and health.

• Habitat for Humanity — Having completed about 50 projects, Central Iowa’s Habitat for Humanity is a great place for both organizations and individuals to lend a hand.

• Student Activities Center, Student Volunteer Services and Leadership and Service Center — These are are all ISU services designed to help connect students with the right leadership and volunteer ideas for them.

All of these resources and events are easily accessible for students so they can learn about how they can improve both their time here at Iowa State and leave it better than when they arrived here.
