Movie Review: “Rio 2”

Jordan Mains

“Rio 2” continues the story of the two lovebirds we know from the first film, Blu and Jewel, who now have three children together. This film takes place a few years after the original.

After Blu and his family discover that they might not be the only bird of their kind still in existence, they decide to travel to the Amazon to see if they can find the birds to bring them back to Rio de Janeiro. After all, birds with blue feathers flock together [which is a phrase that is used quite frequently throughout the film].

So Blu, Jewel and the family navigate their way to the Amazon with the help of Blu’s GPS. It does not take them long to find the other flock of blue macaws, but to their surprise, one of them is Jewel’s father.

Eventually pretty much the entire family feels at home in the Amazon with the newly found flock of blue macaws, with the exception of Blu. Blu has an abundance of trouble adjusting to his new way of life in the wild. He also struggles to meet the expectations of Jewel’s father.

Although Blu is not sure that the Amazon is the right place for his family, the rest of the flock feels right at home in the wilderness. This puts the pressure on Blu to adjust his way of living to make his family happy.

Along with the main plot, there are a few side plots here as well. Nigel [from the first film] is seeking revenge on Blu and his family for rendering Nigel unable to fly. Blu’s former owner Linda and her husband Tulio are also there in the Amazon, trying to keep loggers from tearing the place down. At first, these smaller stories really seem unnecessary, but come into play at the end of the film. I will not give out any spoilers here.

The movie is animated beautifully and is very pleasing to the eye. If you end up going to see this film, definitely spend the extra cash on 3D. You will be glad you did, because that is the only part of this movie that is actually somewhat entertaining.

Overall, I was disappointed in this film, even though I did not expect much out of it. I can not remember a single part of this movie that was legitimately funny. The corny humor of this movie is one that only children are likely to find amusing. Also, the little bit of music that they have in this film is just bad.

There are already talks of a third Rio film, but I think it would be wise for the filmmakers to stop while they are ahead of themselves. With the money they are making on this film however, that likely won’t happen.

I can not say that I liked this movie, but I can not say that I hated it, either.

2/5.
