ISU men’s golf in fifth after first day in Myrtle Beach

Playing one of the toughest courses of the season, the ISU men’s golf team survived the difficult conditions at TPC of Myrtle Beach, standing five shots back of first place heading into Tuesday’s final round at the General Hackler Championship.

Led by Scott Fernandez’ two-round total of 146, the Cyclones posted a team 21-over-par total of 597, good for fifth place in what is a tightly packed leaderboard.

Fernandez failed to post an under-par round, carding rounds of even-par 72 and two-over par 74, but he made the fewest bogies of the team (six) and bested the course average in both rounds.

He is tied for fifth place, three shots behind former Walker Cup player and current Eastern Tennessee State junior Rhys Pugh.

Also in the top-10 for Iowa State is freshman Ruben Sondjaja.

Sondjaja was alone or in a tie for first place for portions of the first and second rounds before a seven-over-par stretch in his last 13 holes dropped him down to a tie for seventh-place at day’s end. He recorded rounds of 70 and 77, and is four shots behind Pugh.

Junior Sam Daley, like Fernandez, bested the course scoring averages in both rounds (77.71 in round one, 76.79 in round two), posting rounds of 77 and 75.

Daley, who is tied for 28th place, had two birdies both at the beginning and end of his first round, but they were sandwiched around five bogies and two double-bogies. In round two his scorecard featured only three bogies against one birdie.

Also tied for 28th place is freshman Nick Voke, who matched Daley with rounds of 77 and 75. Voke only made five birdies on the day, which is the second fewest of the team, but was able to avoid big numbers only posting one double bogie.

Rounding out the starting lineup for Iowa State was redshirt sophomore Collin Foster. Foster enters the final round tied for 55th after rounds of 81 and 80.

Defending co-champion Kent State is in the lead after posting a team total of 16-over-par 592.

Tournament play will conclude with the third and final round March 11.
