While most of the ISU women’s track team headed to Nebraska for competition, a group of distance runners went to New York to compete in the distance medley relay event in the Armory Collegiate Invitational.

Coming into the meet, ISU assistant coach Andrea Grove-McDonough said Arkansas was the team to beat and Arkansas proved her right. Early on Arkansas, Iowa State and Alabama established themselves as the top three teams.

After some battling, Arkansas was able pull away from the field and easily took first with a time of 10:57.15. Iowa State was able to pull ahead from the rest of the field down the stretch, taking second place with a program record 11:11.93.

The next closest finisher was Alabama with a time of 11:26.70.

The distance medley team consists of Perez Rotich, All-American twins Ese and Ejiro Okoro, and cross-country All-American freshman Bethanie Brown.

Taylor McDowell highlighted day one at the Frank Savigne Husker Invitational as she took third in the 5000-meter run with a personal best 17:25.09.

Action from the Frank Savigne Husker Invitational will resume Saturday morning.
