Ames Police took the man involved in the standoff the evening of Feb. 16 to Mary Greeley Medical Center for a mental health evaluation. Police did not charge him with criminal offenses.

“We’re pretty much done with him at that point,” said Geoff Huff, investigations commander for the Ames Police Department.

Huff said because of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPPA privacy laws, even the police department is not privy to information about the man’s health.

Around 6:45 p.m., Ames Police received a call for a welfare check from the man’s family members, said Huff. Officers located the man around 8:40 p.m. at Iceberg Refrigeration behind Cazador Mexican Restaurant across from west Hy-Vee.

The man was not cooperative and entered the Iceberg Refrigeration building. Through a negotiation process involving both police and the man’s family, the man surrendered himself around 11 p.m. Feb. 16.
