ISU forward Jon Feavel’s two-goal performance helped Cyclone Hockey complete the sweep of Illinois.

The No. 9 Cyclone Hockey team (31-8-3, 14-6-0 CSCHL) capped off its last regular season conference series with a 4-2 win against the No. 19 Illini (16-16-2, 4-13-1 CSCHL) on Saturday at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.

The first period saw 19 shots on goal, but neither Iowa State nor Illinois could get the puck in the back of the net.

ISU forward Preston Blanek was ejected from the game for an illegal hit to the head on UI forward Austin Bostock in the final minutes of the first. This penalty was ruled an automatic disqualification, which means Blanek will not be able play in  Friday Feb. 15, game against Central Oklahoma.

Feavel gave Iowa State the lead with a goal early in the second period. The Illini responded quickly though, as UI forward Tadayoshi Shibata scored less than 30 seconds later.

The Cyclones re-captured the lead late in the second when forward J.P. Kascsak’s shot ricochet off the top of net past UI goalie Nick Clarke. But once again, the Illini tied the game only seconds later with a goal by forward Josh Belmont.

Feavel scored his scored his second goal of the night at the 10:53 mark of third period to put the Cyclones back on top.

The Illini pulled their goalie with a 1:07 left in third in attempt to tie the game. This backfired as ISU forward Chris Cucullu was able to score on a shot from center ice.

ISU goalie Matt Cooper blocked 32 of 34 shots on goal and Clarke blocked 31 of 35.

Iowa State will be at home again next weekend, Feb. 14 and Feb. 15, to finish the regular season against Central Oklahoma.
