Cyclone Hockey escapes Ohio with one win

The Cyclone Hockey team avoids being swept in Ohio with a 2-1 overtime win against the Bobcats on Jan. 18.

A day after their third period collapse against the Central States Collegiate Hockey League rival No. 3 Bobcats (22-7-1, 11-3-2 CSCHL), the No. 7 Cyclones (26-8-2, 11-5-0 CSCHL) were able to bounce back and take the second game in Ohio.

In the first period, neither the Cyclones nor the Bobcats could get the puck in the back of the net, as goalie Matt Cooper saved all nine of Ohio’s shots on goal and OU goalie Aaron Alkema saved all four of Iowa State’s shots.

Forward J.P. Kascask gave the Cyclones the lead in the second period. Cooper continued to be prefect at the net, saving 22 shoots throughout.

The Bobcats were able to tie the game in the third period with a goal by forward Patrick Spellacy on a power play. As the final seconds of regulation clicked off the clock, the game was still tied, sending it into overtime.

A breakaway goal in overtime by forward Mark Huber would seal the 2-1 victory for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones will be at home for the first game of next weekend’s series against Iowa at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena but will be away for the second at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
