Iowa State soccer coach Tony Minatta announced he would retain ISU assistant coach Jason Wichman and hire former volunteer assistant Megan Kerns earlier Tuesday.

Kerns spent last season volunteering while Wichman has been on the Cyclone staff for the past two seasons.

“I’m really excited to continue to work with Jason,” Minatta said in a news release. “He has done an outstanding job with the goalkeepers. He has a great rapport not just with the team, but with the athletic department staff. He’s a very hard worker who is dedicated to the improvement and overall success of the Cyclone soccer program.”

Wichman graduated form Simpson College in 2004 and has previously coached at Texas State and Drake. Wichman’s guidance over the goalkeepers and defense led the Cyclones to the Big 12 tournament in 2013 for the first time since 2007. The Cyclones have recorded 14 shutouts since he became a member of the staff.

Kerns joins the program and is an Ames native and former University of Florida player. During her senior year, Kerns earned First Team All-SEC honors and finished her Florida career ranked eighth in points all-time.

“Megan is an incredible addition to the staff,” Minatta said. “Being an All-American forward who was drafted into women’s professional soccer adds an element to our staff that we don’t have. I think she will provide our forwards and attacking players with idiosyncrasies about the game which are going to help them improve and be able to be more prolific in their scoring as well.”

The hires of Kerns and Wichman finish off Minatta’s staff for next season.
