The Cyclone Hockey team’s sticks came alive in the first game of a two-game series against Dakota Bottineau.

The No. 6 Cyclones (22-5-2, CSCHL 8-2-0) cruised to a 5-1 win against Dakota Bottineau on Friday night at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.

In the first period of Friday’s game, the Cyclones got on the board early with a goal by forward Chris Cucullu. Goals by forwards Trevor Lloyd and Nate Percy rounded out the first to give the Cyclones a 3-0 lead heading into the second.

Neither the Cyclones or the Lumberjacks were able to score in the second period. At the end of the period, Lumberjacks’ forward Casey Barile was called for a slashing penalty on defenseman Alex Stephens, causing the defenseman to limp off the ice. Stephens returned later in the game.

Also late in the second, another Lumberjacks’ slashing penalty injured defenseman Alec Wilhelmi. Wilhelmi did not return to the game.

Percy broke the Iowa State’s one-period scoring slump with a goal five minutes into the third period, making it his second goal on the night.

Forward Matt Mehlhaff put the Lumberjacks on the board late in the third period with a goal. But defenseman Antti Helanto struck back for Iowa State, scoring with only one minute left in the third to give the Cyclones a 5-1 victory.

The Cyclones will face Dakota Bottineau again on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
