The Cyclone Hockey team was able to sweep last year’s American Collegiate Hockey Association champion with a 4-1 win on Saturday night at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.

The No. 8 Cyclones (16-3-1, 6-2-0 CSCHL) were able to hand No. 2 Minot State (10-4-1) its fourth loss in five games in the finale of this weekend’s two-game series.

Early in the first period, the Beavers went up 1-0 on the Cyclones with a goal by forward Sean Delwo.  The Cyclones failed to respond with a goal with their own in the period, even though they dominated in shots on net — 13 compared to the Beavers’ six.

A power play in the second, which was caused by a tripping penalty by Minot State forward Ryan Curzon, allowed ISU forward Cory Sellers to score with a mid-ice slap shot. Sellers’ goal pulled the Cyclones into a 1-1 tie with the Beavers.

With only five seconds left in the second period, forward Austin Parle shot the puck past Minot State goalie Riley Hengen to give the Cyclones a 2-1 lead.

A rare goal by defenseman Eero Helanto added to Iowa State’s lead early in the third. Forward Jon Feavel continued Iowa State’s scoring onslaught, as he scored halfway through the third to put the Cyclones up 4-1.

For the remaining of the third, the Cyclones were able to stop the Beavers from scoring to cap off this weekend’s series with two wins.

Iowa State will be on the road next weekend to play Arizona on Nov.22 and 23.
