Netflix Review: ‘Aziz Ansari: Buried Alive’

In front of a live audience in Philadelphia, Penn., Aziz Ansari performed his stand-up special, “Buried Alive.” It was filmed in April, but was just recently made available for public viewing exclusively on Netflix’s streaming service. I have always thought that Aziz is a pretty funny guy, so I had high expectations for this one.

In his performance, Ansari tackled many issues about growing up and facing adulthood. Having just recently turned 30 years old, Ansari feels these things are an inevitable dead end for everybody. He talked about topics including love, marriage, having children and the fears involved with those items.

Ansari also talked about childhood issues like bullying, sexual abuse and misbehaviors. You can tell that Ansari is not a big fan of kids, however it is OK because he is able to laugh at and make fun of himself over it.

Ansari did a very convincing job explaining why there are some people who just should not be parents in his performance, and how some people have kids before they ready for them. He told some great stories about himself and his friends.

Ansari also brought up the controversial issue of gay marriage. He is strong and proud supporter of it and pokes fun of those who are against it, comparing it to other controversial issues in the past like woman’s suffrage and the rights of blacks. You have to love someone who is able to get up on stage in front of hundreds of people and strongly support their viewpoint on such a controversial topic.

Ansari does not stop there. He also talks about how sexualized our media and society are, which is an interesting topic to address. He talks about some of the technology in our modern society, such as online dating and social media. He also puts in humor about things from people’s everyday lives.

Aziz did a great job putting on this show. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time just waiting for what he would say next. There are many laughs to be had in this stand-up special. My expectations were well-met, and I look forward to his future performances down the road.

4/5.
