A goal by ISU forward Chase Rey in the third period propelled the Cyclones past last year’s American Collegiate Hockey Association champions, Minot State, in a 2-1 victory this Friday at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.

The No. 8 Cyclones (15-3-1, 6-2-0 CSCHL) were able to capture a physical win in the first game of their two-game series against No. 2 Minot State (10-3-1) with two goals.

In the first period defense was king. Neither Iowa State nor Minot State was able to put the puck in the back of the net, as ISU goalie Matt Cooper stopped eight of eight shots on goal and Minot State goalie Riley Waselenchuk stopped nine of nine shots on goal.

Iowa State and Minot State went into the second period just like they did the first, scoreless.

In the second period, the Cyclones got on the board early with a goal by forward Nate Percy. But on the Beavers’ next possession, they responded with a goal of their own by forward Logan Herauf, tying the game 1-1.

The crowd erupted when returning ISU forward Rey put the puck in the back in the net halfway through the third period , which gave the Cyclones a 2-1 lead. Iowa State was able to protect this lead for the remaining of the period for the win.

The Cyclones and Beavers will continue their weekend at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
