The Iowa State women’s golf team finished up at the Dick McGuire Invitational. When all was said and done the team ended the invitational tied for 3rd place. From the Cyclones perspective, there were a lot of positive takeaways.

New Year, Better Team

Last year the Iowa State women’s team tied for 10th place. That is not a terrible standing, but certainly one that they hoped to improve on. They did just that. Iowa State jumped up seven places between this year and last year.

The Cyclones found themselves in the top three with Ole Miss, Kent State and Pepperdine, who are some of the better golfing schools in the nation. Iowa State’s overall score improved from 885 to 862, a difference of 23. This is no small feat that was accomplished and definitely something people should take notice of.

Improvement from Old and New Players

The Cyclones saw success individually as well. Last year their highest ranked golfer was Chayanit Wangmahaporn who tied for 15th place. This year their highest was Taglao Jeeravivitaporn who finished in 11th place. The average ranking of Iowa State last year was around 50th place. The average ranking of Iowa State this year is near 25th place.

Impressive Shooting

The last takeaway from this invitation is how impressive Iowa State’s shooting was. The Cyclones ranked top four in how well they scored on par threes, par fours, and par fives. Only Kent State could match that level of production. Iowa State shot three above the score on par threes, fifteen above on par fours, and nine below on par fives. The women also scored the 3rd most pars and the 4th most birdies.

What’s next

Iowa State takes a week off before it heads to Madison, Wisconsin, to participate in East and West Match Play at the University of Wisconsin.
