Cyclones suffer their first loss in CSCHL

The Cyclone hockey team fell 1-0 to Central States Collegiate Hockey League rival Ohio in Friday’s game at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.

The No. 12 Bobcats (8-2-1, 1-0 CSCHL) ended the No. 5 Cyclones (9-2, 2-1 CSCHL) season last year in the American Collegiate Hockey Association tournament. The loss to the Bobcats this year marks the first loss for the Cyclones in the CSCHL.

ISU goalie Matt Cooper and OU goalie Aaron Alkema were able to keep the sticks quiet on both sides in the first period by keeping the game scoreless going into the second period. Cooper blocked all six shots on goal by the Bobcats, and Alkema blocked all five shots on goal by the Cyclones.

In early the second period, the Bobcats were able to get on the board with a goal by forward Tom Whetsel, putting them up 1-0.

That one goal was all the Bobcats needed. Just like in the first, both goalies again were perfect at the net in the third period, with Cooper blocking all nine shots on goal and Alkema blocking all eight shots on goal.

The Cyclones and the Bobcats will play again at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 26, at Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
