Titus: Homecoming No. 101

Katie Titus

Homecoming 101 is right around the corner and Iowa Staters all over campus are preparing for it. There are many things that go into Homecoming week at Iowa State. There is everything from the food vendors to the football game, to the lawn displays and Yell like Hell. Alumni come in from all over the country to see what we are going to do differently this year and which things are going to remain consistent with tradition.

The first types of Homecoming activities to be discussed are those that take place within the greek community. When it comes to Homecoming, the greeks do it differently. Sororities and fraternities are paired together to compete against each other in Yell Like Hell, which is a battle cry contest that tells a story that goes through a series of cuts leading up to a final, paint-covered performance. Lawn Display is a short skit that pairings construct and perform on fraternities’ front lawns, also part of a competition.

Aside from greek events, there are many other activities that are associated with Homecoming as well.

Alumni come from far and wide to see what new and improved things the university has to offer and how it has changed through the years. The alumni association hosts a tailgating event for all alumni to attend. Much of the funding for programs we have here at the university comes from our alumni, and we as students should be grateful for their contributions and welcome our alumni back home with open arms.

Homecoming court will be celebrated by students on campus and around the community, and by getting a $5 button at the beginning of the week, students have the opportunity for free lunch on Central Campus catered by different local restaurants.

Although all of these are traditional Homecoming activities, there is one event that takes place on Saturday that will truly bring us all together.

Football.

The football game will be taking place on Saturday against the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University. This is the time when all ISU students and alumni come together as a family to support the Cyclones.

Jack Trice has been flooded with people attending the game because of the high enrollment levels at the university, and we should expect no different for the Homecoming game. So get out there in your cardinal and gold and cheer on your school.

No matter what events you are participating in this year at Iowa State, we are all Cyclones and should be participating in the celebration of 101 years of Homecoming. We are carrying on traditions and bringing in new ones of our own. So whether you are a past, present or future Cyclone, get excited to have a great Homecoming.
