Iowa State picks up win to move to 2-0

The Iowa State hockey team was impressive again in picking up at 5-1 win, and series sweep, Saturday afternoon against the Waldorf Warriors.

Seth Serhienko was able to get the Cylcones’ offense going early when he picked up a goal only a little under three minutes into the game. Serhienko would pick up one assist to go along with his goal, giving him two points on the night.

It didn’t take long for Iowa State to strike again as sophomore Jake Bruhn put in a power play goal at the 12:53 mark in the first period giving Iowa State a 2-0 lead. Bruhn finished the afternoon with three points, he picked up two assists, as well as, his goal.

Waldorf was able to answer back with 5:09 left in the second period when Brent Putney was able to put the puck into the net bringing the score to 2-1.

Early in the third period Iowa State was able to score again and they never looked back from there. John Feavel was able to pick up a shorthanded goal giving Iowa State the 3-1 lead. Feavel finished the night with two assists, giving him three points on the night.

Mid-way through the third period Iowa State was able to score again on and unassisted goal helped by some swift moves by junior Antti Helanto. Helanto’s goal gave the Cyclones a 4-1 advantage, it also gave Helanto his second point of the night after picking up an assist earlier in the game.

Iowa State was able to pick up one more goal late by Nate Percy to give Iowa State the 5-1 victory.

Scott Antonsen and Preston Blanek also picked up assists for the Cyclones.

Iowa State hockey’s next action is next Saturday and Sunday at home against the Huntsville Havoc, both games start at 7:30.
