When moving, make sure to arm yourself with multiple of boxes and plastic containers for plenty of safe storage!

Moving is one of the most stressful things a person can go through. Here are a few certain steps to ensure a quick move-in:

  • Before you start packing, purge all of your unwanted items.
  • You can use a free online moving calculator to help determine how many boxes and how much space you’ll need in the vehicle. Don’t be afraid to use multiple smaller boxes versus a couple large ones. This will also help when carrying things in, especially up stairs.
  • Label all of your boxes clearly. If you number them as well, you can keep better track of how many boxes you have in total and which ones to unpack first.
  • Remember to take your time while packing. It’s easier to organize everything when you’re not rushing.
  • Consume or donate items you don’t want to move. This includes all of the perishable items hiding in your fridge.
  • Coordinate when you’re moving in with your roommates so you aren’t all trying to haul things in and organize them at the same time.
  • Make sure to pack a fan or two that are easily accessible and bring water. August weather can be brutal in Iowa, so it’s essential that you stay cool and hydrated while moving around so much in the heat.
  • “Don’t forget the smaller things like clothing hangers and cleaning supplies. Try not to overload yourself with clothes you don’t really need, but maybe have a heavier jacket for earlier in the year,” said Brittney Rutherford, Program Coordinator II for Iowa State’s Department of Residence.
  • Rutherford also recommended things like bike locks and insurance for social security or any personal items of importance you may have.
