In 103-degree heat, Erin Valenti led the ISU women’s cross-country to victory during its season opener at the Bulldog 4K Classic on Friday in Des Moines.

Valenti won the meet with a time of 12:56 for the Cyclones while Ana Buenekke, Taylor McDowell and Julie Wiemerslage came in third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Heidi Engelhardt came in 17th place, and Emily Brush finished 36th.

The Bulldog 4K Classic marks the first ISU event for head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough, who joined the Cyclones this year after serving as head coach for the women’s cross-country program at the University of Connecticut.

The Cyclones’ next competition will be at the Iowa Black & Gold Invite on Sept. 13 in Iowa City.
