Barbara Mack will be given the 2013 James W. Schwartz Award from the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication. The award, created in honor of former department chair of the school, James Schwartz, is one of the highest honors within the Greenlee School.

The decision to give Mack the award was made earlier this year to recognize her efforts to educate students about law and social justice. Mack is also credited with helping found the Iowa Freedom of Information council.

Mack passed away unexpectedly in August 2012, though she continues to be an inspiration to many of her former students. Alumni, such as CNN anchor Christine Romans, and faculty alike will be speaking at the event in memory of her work.

Recent recipients of the award include Romans, Barbara Iverson, John Arends, David Kurns and Everett M. Rogers.
